چکیده

Subtilin is an antibiotic extracted from the cells of a particular strain of Bacillus subtiliws.3" It is a low molecular weight substance that dialyzes through collodion membranes, is sensitive to light and alkali, and has the structure of a peptide. Subtilin is soluble to at least 30 per cent in saltfree acidified solution. The solubility in acid solution is markedly decreased by the presence of salt. In the presence of 0.5 to 1 per cent of sodium chloride the solubility is reduced to approximately 0.5 to 0.2 per cent. The addition of serum to an aqueous solution of subtilin produces a marked precipitation. The antibiotic is probably a basic substance giving water-soluble salts (1). The antibacterial spectrum of subtilin (2) is similar to that of penicillin. It seems reasonable to postulate that the antibiotic might prove useful in infections caused by penicillin-fast or penicillinresistant organisms. In addition, subtilin is effective against Mycobacterium tuberculosis which is not antagonized by penicillin. The low solubility of subtilin in salt solutions and in serum is probably a desirable property in the treatment of infections caused by such organisms as the pneumococcus (3), streptococci (4), micrococci (5), the anthrax bacillus (6), etc., in which relatively small doses are required. Precipitation of the antibiotic in the presence of body fluids should slow down its elimination, thus giv-

The Tuberculostatic Effect of Subtilin in Vitro and in Vivo.

The antituberculosis activity of subtilin, an antibiotic agent introduced by Jansen and Hirschmann (1944), has been the subject of conflicting reports in the literature. Salle and Jann (1945) reported that subtilin in a dilution of 1:50,000 prevented surface growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis on Long's synthetic medium, and that transfers into fresh medium made from tubes containing 1:10,000 ...

Brucella melitensis and Mycobacterium tuberculosis depict overlapping gene expression patterns induced in infected THP-1 macrophages

Pathogens infecting mammalian cells have developed various strategies to suppress and evade their hosts’ defensive mechanisms. In this line, the intracellular bacteria that are able to survive and propagate within their host cells must have developed strategies to avert their host’s killing attitude. Studying the interface of host-pathogen confrontation can provide valuable information for defi...

The role of nontuberculous mycobacteria in cutaneous infections of diabetic patients: a literature review

Background: Diabetes is an important metabolic disease with myriad manifestations and complications, affecting many people. Cutaneous infections impact numerous diabetic patients. Among different bacterial infections in diabetic patients, the infections caused by mycobacteria other than Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MOTT) eventuate in complications owing to the paucity of accurate detection...

A cross sectional study on Dirofilaria immitis and Acanthocheilonema reconditum in sheepdogs in a western region in Iran

Iran is one of the endemic areas of Dirofilariasis, and also one of the most important zoonotic infections. Dirofilaria immitis causes a severe and fatal disease called heartworm disease in dog. It also produces pulmonary nodules in humans. The worm is to be investigated as a potential infection of humans and animals in various provinces in Iran. In this research, the samples were ...
